Basic Sculpture; and Friday Sketch and Sculpture

    Basic sculpture

...using the instruction method of 19th century instructor Edouard Lanteri

with Nick Leavey, Scott Breton or Ryan Daffurn

    Back to Full Class timetable

The beginners sculpting course will lead you through a traditional skills based set of exercises based upon the course developed by Edouard Lanteri at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

By working through the basic sculpting course, you will begin to learn the concepts and skills fundamental to an artists ability to reproduce what they see in three dimensions. Throughout the beginners course your work will focus on representing organic form and mass. You will learn the basic observational and measuring techniques that will help you model what you see, finally using your knowledge to produce a series of objects based upon the main facial features of Michaelangelos ‘David’.

We would also strongly recommend that you purchase a copy of or download:

‘Modelling and sculpting the human figure’ by Edouard Lanteri. (PDF file) - PDF attachment

    ISBN 0-486-25006-7

    Published by Dover publications inc.

The book is available above for free download, or through www.archive.org which has many other out of copyright art books. Also it is still in print if you like hard copies.  See our the link on the recommended books section of the resources page.

    Course materials required:

    Basic starter kit:

    Use of a Baseboard

Two blocks of 'Monster Clay' (4.4kg)

A starter kit of ribbon and knife tools

The cost of the kit is $105, which will provide you with sufficient material to complete the four exercises indicated above (if the material is reused each time a new exercise is undertaken). We use a premium artificial clay (Monster Clay) in preference to natural clay for the simple reason that it is easier for you to store, and doesn’t dry out if left for too long.

You are welcome to use your own tools if you have them, and 'Monster Clay' is generally available for $45 for a 2.2kg block at the studio. Alternatively I would recommend a visit to the Art Shed in West End, or Barnes in Woolloongabba for your requirements.

    Course costs:

The duration of the course is flexible, and varies according to your ability and progress. Some students will be quicker than others to grasp concepts and produce a folio of a high standard. For this reason, students may attend on a casual basis at $38 per session, or purchase a ten lesson card for $350. Further discounts apply to full-time tertiary and school students.  See our Price List for details.

Enrol by notifying us that you would like to attend, via our online message form or call us.  Then come along to one of our scheduled classes.

    Friday morning Sketch and Sculpture:

We are now running a Friday morning Sketch club which is designed for sculptors and anybody else who wishes to take advantage of a longer pose.

We start at 9.30am, finishing at midday. The session costs $15. We establish the mornings pose with three poses of five minutes each, and then the remainder of the morning is spent working with the best of those poses.

The studio is set up with sculpture stations as well as easels, which allows for work 'in the round'. If a pose is popular, we can usually extend the pose into a second week.

Whilst formal instruction isn't yet available, friendly advice is always forthcoming. Should you be interested in an instructed class, please forward your details to info@atelierartclasses.com  and we will let you know when we have sufficient numbers.

If you are interested in workshops which demonstrate mould and cast making, please let us know of your interest through the same email address.

    When:        Friday morning 9.30 – 12.00

    Cost:          $15
