    The Atelier education system

"Atelier" (At-el-ier)  is the French word for "workshop".  It is a time tested learning structure in which students work alongside a master artist or craftsman within their studio.  Students gain confidence and understanding in their medium with direct lessons, and projects as well as through osmosis, by observing experienced artists pursue their own work and career. Atelier's were very common in Europe especially, up until the 20th century.

Ideally it is a full time curriculum over several years duration, where a students' work will develop with greater complexity as their skills develop. The historical Atelier model is very different from almost all learning systems currently available, but similiar to a trade apprenticeship.

    Atelier Art Classes

In May 2010, Ryan Daffurn, Nick Leavey and Scott Breton began Atelier Art Classes amoungst the shared studio space they work in, at Salisbury.  Classes are run within a warehouse, that was originally a munitions factory for the army, and now contains 10 artist studios plus common areas. The warehouse is run by a not for profit organisation which supports the Fine Arts in Brisbane entitled, 'Salisbury Studios Queensland Incorporated'.

All three teachers received a thorough traditional art education themselves.

The Atelier's ambition is to maintain an environment where students can develop their fundamental understanding at their own pace. We help students achieve their artistic goals by guidance in the acquisition of traditional skills and sound knowledge of the visual world.

The core curriculum focusses on how to realistically represent form and light, as well as the fundamentals of compositional design.

In a nutshell, we offer tangible, practical advice with solid theoretical basis, through plenty of demonstrations, examples and guided exercises for you to complete.  All class tuition is tailored to the individual.
