Art Image Databases
If you are seeking images of artworks online that interest you, we recommend you start with the obvious approach- basic searches of the net and looking into the major public museums as well as commercial art dealers who now all have dedicated websites for their collections.
Below however is a list of databases for the more serious art voyeur. Some of these websites are dedicated to individual artists, others cluster artists' by country of origin, or sometimes a period in art history, elsewhere by a particular aesthetic shared, and also artists can be collected by the indulgence of the website creator.
All databases below are substantial in their store of images.

We recommend this website as the first point of contact, it has one of the most useful and widest reaching operation for art images. It links directly to the main institutional galleries which represent artists, also lists image galleries, art market history, articles and now commercial galleries.

Encompasses many Harvard institutions including the Fogg Musueum, Portrait Museum. Collection covers all periods European/ Asian / American.
Hi-res images are available on application to the foundation.

The largest database of Singer Sargent artwork and information online we know. Its an online homage with over 1000 paintings. Theres a Q & A forum, info on Sargent's painting techniques plus biography. Also includes details on his associates and their relationships.

ARC has a huge image database with a focus on 19th century academic artists. Its push for contemporary realist art is excellent, with funding and promotion all from one man who puts his money where his mouth is.
